Maras Salt Mines Moray Cusco Perú

This tour presents some of the most interesting Inca sites in Cusco. The tour begins with a visit to the colonial town of Maras and its church. From Maras we continue to the nearby Inca site of Moray, a magnificent series of terraced circles embedded in the ground that were used by the Incas for crop experimentation. Our final destination is the salt mines, in use since pre-Inca times. Water from a subway stream is channeled through pools where it evaporates and leaves crystals of pure salt. With thousands of white pools stretching across the valley, the views are breathtaking.

Moray is a unique archaeological site consisting of circular terraces that were used by the Incas for agricultural experimentation. The terraces are arranged in concentric circles, and each level has a different microclimate that allowed the Incas to grow a variety of crops. The terraces are thought to have been used for agricultural research, as the Incas were known for their innovative farming techniques.

Maras salt mines, on the other hand, are a series of thousands of small pools carved into the mountainside that are used to extract salt. The pools are fed by a nearby underground saltwater stream, and the saltwater is left to evaporate in the sun, leaving behind salt crystals that are harvested by local families.
